Flock Favorites Toolbar Bookmarks

Why is this page necessary?  

• In Firefox, to create a new bookmark on the toolbar, you just right click and select ‘New Bookmark…’.  This option does not exist in Flock.
• In Firefox to edit a toolbar bookmark, you just right-click it and select properties.  You can edit all fields including ‘Location’ which may even be javascript code.  In Flock, it is not possible to edit the location field.

In Flock, the simple way to add to the bookmark toolbar is to drag and drop a link from an open webpage.

Therefore, this page is nothing more than a template or placeholder for bookmarks, and bookmarklets, that you may wish to drag to the Flock toolbar.  

Some useful bookmarks are already included below.

To add and edit your own, just edit this page.  You can use Notepad, or better, use a webpage editor.  No need to use anything fancy like Frontpage or Dreamweaver, I recommend Portable NVU which you can download here.  Alternatively, if you have the Scrapbook Extension for Flock, which I personally use and think is excellent, you can use that.

Update Portable Flock to version 0.7.4.1

This applies to the excellent Portable Flock available here, which is perfect for running on a USB drive for example.

The Flock folk just released an update to Flock version 0.7.4.1.  If you want to update your portable Flock version, the following worked for me:

1. Download the new Flock here.

2. Run the installer.  When it asks for you to confirm the installation directory, make sure to change  it to the ‘App’ subfolder of your ‘PortableFlock’ folder. The destination folder will look something like this:

NB.  The installer tries to add an extra “\flock\” for you at the end of the path.  Delete this.

3. Proceed with the installation.

4.  After install, when you run Portable Flock, make sure to run using PortableFlock.exe, not the Flock.exe you have just installed… i.e. your original desktop icon should still work.

5. If successful, on next run Flock detects an upgrade and will automatically search for compatible upgrades for your installed extensions.

Wow what a complete mess! I am forcing myself to learn to use OpenOffice.org Writer, for reasons of portability. There are some things it does better than MSWord, but many things just don’t seem intuitive to me after a decade of MSWord as my regular word-processor.

In Word it is so easy to add a cross-reference to a numbered paragraph, and when the numbers get updated so does your cross-reference. If you do a lot of legal or commercial documentation (and sometimes I do) this is an essential feature.

Right now I’m working on a contract document that I’ve imported from MSWord… a few pages long. First thing I see is that the paragraph numbering that has been lovingly created has been lost and I wasted hours today trying to fix it. Then, shock horror, I realise my need to cross-reference paragraph numbers in OpenOffice. It is not straightforward and the Help does not, er, help. There has to be a way…. When I find it I will post it right here on miniHelpfiles.
But right now, I have 14 cross-references to hard-enter, otherwise I won’t make the deadline on this contract….
